Heather Byrd, a Sarasota attorney, received the 2020 Judge John M. Scheb Professionalism Award. Each year, the award honors a Sarasota County attorney who demonstrates exceptional professionalism in daily legal practice.
To select the recipient, the Masters of the Inn vote by secret ballot. Through this process, the award recognizes attorneys who consistently uphold high standards of integrity, leadership, and service within the legal profession.
“Heather Byrd is a longtime member of our Inn and has consistently exemplified professionalism and leadership throughout her distinguished legal career,” said the Honorable Hunter Carroll, President of the Judge John M. Scheb American Inn of Court. Accordingly, he noted that she remains deeply committed to the values established by the Inn’s founder, Judge Scheb.
After graduating with honors from Fairfield University, Byrd earned her law degree from Quinnipiac College of Law. In 1996, she began practicing law and now serves as an Officer and Partner at The Byrd Law Firm, where she focuses on family law matters.
In addition, Byrd holds certification as a family mediator through the Florida Supreme Court and serves as a founding member of the Collaborating Family Law Professionals of Sarasota County.
Founded in 1991, the Judge John M. Scheb American Inn of Court promotes excellence, professionalism, and ethics in legal advocacy. Over the years, past recipients of the Professionalism Award have included Mark Kapusta, Laurie Zimmerman, Bill Partridge, Hon. Stephen Walker, Drew Clayton, Kate Halvorsen, Ted Eastmore, and Bonnie Polk.
Best Lawyers is the oldest and most respected peer-review publication company in the legal profession.
As a result, both clients and legal professionals view recognition by Best Lawyers as a meaningful honor. Peers, not publishers or advertisers, grant this distinction through direct evaluation.
For more than forty years, Best Lawyers has earned the trust of the legal community, the media, and the public. Because of this, many consider its publications among the most reliable and unbiased sources for legal referrals.
To determine recognition, Best Lawyers conducts extensive peer-review surveys. Tens of thousands of leading attorneys confidentially evaluate the professional abilities of other lawyers within their practice areas. Only those attorneys who consistently receive strong peer feedback are selected.
Moreover, attorneys must continue to receive positive peer evaluations to remain listed in future editions. Importantly, lawyers cannot pay any fee to participate or to receive recognition. Instead, Best Lawyers bases inclusion entirely on merit and professional respect.
